HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Connie Vigallon Castro born June 3, 1913 the third oldest Vigallon sister, lived on Williams Street during World War II with her husband Miguel (Mike) Castro the third oldest Castro brother, and there two sons Mike and Bob. Her favorite thing was planting.

She planted a lawn in front and in back and a vegetable garden (victory garden) as so many people did during those times. She planted tomatos, garlic, lettuce, radish, corn, horse beans, and I can't even remember what else. Planting was only half her pleasure, the other half was in sharing her harvest with friends, neighbors, and family. She really loves flowers, so along with the vegetables she planted flowers in the backyard, the frontyard, and all along the side of the house. In 1951 the family moved to Washington Avenue to a home they purchased in the Business District. It was a large property and Connie was soon outside planting her lawn in front and back. By this time San Leandro had a super market so it was easier to get your fresh vegetables there. All the better, so Connie had extra areas to plant her flowers.

Mike, having a business head thought the land was worth too much to just plant flowers on it. In 1961 he had a new home built in the back of the land, tore down the old house and had two commercial buildings take its place. No room was left for dirt for Connie's flowers. Connie bought giant pots to set on the cement in front of her house and along the two carports and any other space she could find. She bought more pot that hung on the fence and any container with an opening had a flower in it. Connie still has more flowers growing in her yard then most people have.
